Wallace Roney recalls the sound of the greats with his Kanstul 1603+ Wallace Roney Model

When we released our Model 1603 trumpet, the word spread quickly in the trumpet world that finally, a brassmaker had succeeded in re-creating the experience of playing one of the truly legendary horns of jazz: the Martin Committee (in the popular number 3 bore).

The Committee has been a favorite of some of the greatest, including Miles, Dizzy, Roy Eldridge, Fats Navarro, Chet, Blue Mitchell, Maynard, Kenny Dorham, Art Farmer, and classical trumpeter Armando Ghittila.

Recently, we worked with New York-based jazz artist Wallace Roney to build a him a Model 1603 with some very special features, such as a larger, specially annealed bell and bell wire, a hand-drawn, tapered tuning slide, all-reverse slides, and custom Roney-designed slide triggers (not to mention his exclusive blue-tinted lacquer finish). We call this special edition the 1603+ Wallace Roney Model.

Wallace has been playing gigs in the US and Europe with his new horn, to great reviews—both from audiences and from Wallace himself.

Having played for years on an original Martin Committee (given to him by his mentor, Miles Davis), Wallace expected a lot from his 1603+. Here’s what he has to say about it:

“This is absolutely the best horn I’ve ever played. It has the playing characteristics of the classic Martin Committee given to me by Miles. In this trumpet I hear the sound of our icons, and the sound of the future.”

The 1603+ Wallace Roney Model is factory priced at $5,500, and comes with a plush Gladstone case, gold plated mouthpiece, and your choice of clear lacquer, bright gold lacquer, midnight blue lacquer, scratch finish, silverplate, or any combination of these. Gold plating is additional—we can quote it separately if you like.
